4. Palpitations
Palpitations and a rapid heartbeat, along with feelings of anxiety, may be caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood. As you may guess, a consistently rapid heart rate isn’t good for your cardiovascular system or for the rest of your body.
While there are several root causes that may result in palpitations (we recommend you talk to your doctor if you experience them), it’s important to know that when your blood doesn’t have enough oxygen, your heart works extra hard to compensate. As a result, the heart is under a lot of pressure, which can cause it to beat irregularly, faster, and with more pain.
It’s worth mentioning that untreated anemia can aggravate underlying cardiovascular issues. Extreme cases can even lead to heart murmurs, an enlarged heart, or even heart failure.
