8. Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome

…Did you know that a shortage of vitamin B-1 can result in a type of dementia that is called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome?

Wernicke’s encephalopathy, also called Wernicke’s illness, is a type of brain disease that causes bleeding in the lower parts of the brain. It can be caused by a lack of B-1 nutrients.

Some of the physical signs of this disease include loss of muscle coordination and double vision. This illness is tricky because if Wernicke’s disease is left untreated for longer periods, it eventually tends to lessen and makes room for Korsakoff syndrome to grow.

The Korsakoff syndrome is a form of memory impairment that is triggered by advanced Wernicke’s illness. People who suffer from Korsakoff syndrome might experience difficulties with the followings:

  • learning new things;
  • processing information;
  • remembering things.
