Types of CJD
Even though prions are not fully understood by researchers and healthcare providers, CJD cases can be divided into 3 categories:
- Familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease – is typically caused by inherited genetic mutations that can trigger the production of this abnormal protein.
- Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease – is considered to be the most common type of CJD. What’s interesting and confusing at the same time is that the origin of prion spread is still an enigma.
- Acquired Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease – this is extremely rare, but this version of CJD might be the result of exposure to prion, mainly through the consumption of contaminated meat.
