Multiple sclerosis is considered to be an immune-mediated disease, which means that the body’s immune system is attacking healthy nerve tissue, which might cause nerve damage throughout the entire body.
The activity of the immune system depends on the inflammation that’s responsible for many MS symptoms. Some of these might flare up during an episode of immune system activity, and then suddenly resolve the attack ends.
There is ongoing research that’s currently investigating whether suppressing the immune system with specific medication might have a positive impact on MS. There are some therapies that are focused on particular immune cells, and the whole purpose of it is to prevent them from attacking the nerves. Even so, drugs that suppress the immune system might make people vulnerable to unwanted infection.
