Risks: The most significant risk associated with acupuncture treatment is bruising and bleeding from needle insertion, particularly if you have a bleeding disorder like hemophilia or are on blood thinners like warfarin.
Ask your doctor if acupuncture is the best option for you to try. Other potential risks include damage to blood vessels or nerves and infection if acupuncture isn’t performed correctly or the needles aren’t clean.
Because the lungs are very close to the skin, there’s also a possible risk of lung puncture if the needles are inserted too profoundly into the shoulder blade area and the upper back.
Side Effects: Most people don’t experience any side effects from acupuncture treatment. But possible reactions might include:
