Umbilical hernias

Umbilical hernias are those hernias in which tissues bulge through an area of weakness in the belly button area.

This type of hernia is causing a visible bulge in or around the belly button, which is usually worse when you cough or even when you strain when you have a bowel movement.

As the American College of Surgeons said, an estimated 10 percent of all kinds of hernias in the abdominal area in adults are umbilical.

They usually appear when muscles weaken with age.

Umbilical hernias are even more common in babies who are under 6 months old. The majority of umbilical hernias are not painful at all and don’t cause problems either. They might require surgery, in case they don’t go away on their own.
