Incisional hernias

An incisional hernia happens after you’ve had stomach surgery.

It involves an incision down the middle of the stomach. If the surgical wound isn’t completely healed, the person might be more vulnerable to developing a hernia. On average, 15 to 20 percent of people who had abdominal surgery experience incisional hernias. Some of the risk factors include:

  • undergoing emergency surgery
  • experiencing major complications during or after the surgery, such as infection
  • having some chronic conditions, such as diabetes and kidney failure
  • having obesity
  • smoking
  • being on certain long-term medications, such as steroids and immunosuppressants

Some of these doctors use the term “ventral hernia” and “incisional hernia” for the same condition.

A ventral hernia describes a hernia that happens along the midline of the stomach. Even so, not all ventral hernias are incisional.
