1. Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer

Non-melanoma skin cancer, which includes squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, is the most common type of cancer. It affects over a million Americans each year. We don’t know exactly how many cases there are each year, as doctors can usually treat them in their offices without having to report them to cancer registries.

Signs of squamous cell carcinoma include wart-like growths; scaly, red patches with uneven borders; growths that are irritated, itchy, or painful; sores that won’t heal, bleed easily, or form a crust that doesn’t go away.

Squamous cell carcinoma is usually found on those areas of the body that get a lot of sunlight, like your face.

Signs of basal cell carcinoma include raised, scaly red patches; flat, pale areas of skin that look like scars; lingering sores or sores that heal and then reappear; small, smooth, shiny lumps that are red, pink, or white; pink growths with indents or raised edges; growths or sores that itch, bleed, or have small blood vessels on their surface.

Basal cell carcinoma usually forms on your torso, neck, face, and head.
