Surprisingly healthy habit: Indulging in high-fat foods

Following guidance from the Department of Agriculture in the 90s, millions of American people aiming to lose weight started switching to a low-fat, high-starch diet.

They opted for margarine instead of butter and “fat-free” instead of “regular,” and they restrained their cravings in rich, creamy foods. But guess what? It didn’t work!

An eight-year trial involving roughly 50,000 women, half of whom went on a low-fat diet, found that those on the low-fat program didn’t lower their risk of colorectal cancer, breast cancer, or heart disease. Also, they didn’t really lose much weight.

New recommendations show that healthy fats, like those from fish, nuts, and avocados, are good for you if eaten in moderation. So you should definitely add them back into your diet if you haven’t already and maintain this surprisingly healthy habit.
