1. Swollen gums

One of the early signs of a root canal can be seen in the swollen gums around the tooth that has been affected. This is not a definite sign, as these types of swellings can come and go, but they are among the first signs that there is something wrong with your tooth.

The gums are very sensitive to most types of infections, and if your gums are swollen, tender, or hurting when you touch them, then that is a clear sign that you need to schedule a meeting with your dentist.

In the case of a root canal, the gum swelling is caused by the fact that the dead pulp tissue in your tooth is producing acidic waste products, which can be the cause of edema (the medical term for swelling) outside of the root of the tooth!

What’s more, you may also end up developing other gum problems, such as a little pimple (also known as parulis, gum boils, or abscesses). In this case, the boil will probably produce pus due to the infection, and it may be the reason why you recently noticed your breath smelling bad or the cause of your mouth having an unpleasant taste.
