Some chronic pain conditions, like lower back pain and migraines, can be triggered, caused, or worsened by body muscles tensing up. According to doctors, chronic low back pain is often related to emotional and psychological strain. Frequently, it’s muscle tightness and tension that are creating or pulling strain and then leading to this sensation of pain.

A 2017 review examined the overlaps between chronic pain and chronic mental tension, discovering that both conditions can cause similar responses in the brain, especially in the amygdala and hippocampus.

The researchers also observed, however, that since humans experience chronic stress and pain in a wide variety of ways, these two conditions don’t always overlap.
