9. Autoimmune Conditions

According to experts, many inflammatory conditions are worsened by negative emotions and mental tension, and that includes autoimmune conditions like psoriasis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

A Swedish population-wide study published in 2018 showed that patients with a stress disorder were more susceptible to developing an auto-immune disorder (9 per 1,000 people per year compared with 6 per 1,000 among those with no stress disorders).

According to the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association, there are over 50 million people in the US who have an autoimmune disease.

The good news is that there are several effective ways to manage stress, including mindfulness and yoga. While these strategies don’t change or undo whatever overwhelming situations are making you anxious (a busy schedule, family arguments, or financial woes), they can help your brain and body better cope with them.
