How to prevent it
In most cases, there’s no way you can prevent hernias. They appear due to a combination of genetic and medical history. Even so, there are a couple of things you can try to keep your body as healthy as possible:
- maintain your weight so you can avoid pressure on the abdominal wall
- quit smoking if you are currently smoking
- refuse any situation where you’d have to lift weights, especially if you’ve had abdominal surgery. Lifting heavy weights might place excess stress on the abdominal wall
- and refrain from straining when you pass a bowel movement. Eating a high-fiber diet and drinking lots of water might help reduce constipation and make things easier.
