Light sensitivity after cataract surgery

After your removal, a little bit of this cataract surgery risk is expected due to dryness in the eye. But if your eyes reflexively close with light exposure or squint, it could signal inflammation in the eye or iritis.

A steroid drop that your ophthalmologist prescribed can be a big help. Sometimes, you might even need to wear sunglasses for a few months until iritis disappears. It’s often caused by a “rebound” as you wean off your anti-inflammatory drops.

But you should call your doctor if something feels off because ongoing dry eyes and blepharitis can cause continued light sensitivity. And sometimes, other causes need to be examined. Extreme light sensitivity can be a telltale sign of infection.

So, if you’re experiencing this, call your ophthalmologist immediately.
