#5 Your Brain Is Sorting Out Memories During REM Sleep
After deep sleep comes REM sleep. Most people go through six REM cycles each night, each lasting roughly 90 minutes. Your brain gets busier as it processes information from the day and sorts through memories. This stage is called rapid eye movement sleep since your eyes naturally move irregularly during this period.
Compared to REM sleep, non-REM sleep has very diverse dream patterns. Non-REM dreams are significantly more realistic and accurate. Most of the time, they are simply our brain’s daily recollections being played again. In contrast, the imaginative, abstract, and irrational types of dreaming take place during REM sleep.
