Antiseizure drugs

There is a fear that seizure medications that are used to treat both seizures and conditions such as mood disorders, mania, bipolar disorder, and even nerve pain can end up causing memory loss in seniors. This is because these medications end up slowing some of the signals in the central nervous system (CNS), which is believed to stop some of the convulsions experienced by people who have seizures. The issue is that these medications also dampen other signals in the CNS, which can cause memory loss in seniors.

Researchers are also worried that since these medications are also sedatives, it is hard to tell the difference between a true loss of cognition and someone just being sedated. The best way to make sure that memory loss will not impact you, in the long run, is to discuss this possibility with your doctor and see if a lower dosage is possible so that they are still effective. That way, you can still take these important drugs while also minimizing the possible side effects due to the small dosage.

Never take another dosage of your medication without discussing it first with your primary care doctor!
