What do you know about the side effects of too much vitamin D?
As you already know, all healthcare providers tell us to consume foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, and if we don’t get enough, they advise us to take supplements. But is it possible to take too many vitamins? Let’s take a particular example and talk more about it because things are really interesting.
Vitamin D is one of the most important minerals your body can receive. It’s great for growing and developing your muscle cells, maintaining the health of your skeletal system, and assuring the proper functioning of the adaptive and instinctive immune systems. If you don’t have enough of it in your system, you are more likely to be at higher risk of getting an infection or a disease, and also bone demineralization.
Speaking of deficiency, several studies have discovered that roughly 40% of American adults don’t have enough levels of vitamin D. What’s even more interesting is that approximately 1 billion people are diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency.

I tbink its a Boron mineral deficiency ..not a Vitamin D3 deficiency …..you could take 50,000iu of D3 = One Mg of D3 and it might be a very toxic amount of Rat Poision …..Taking 10 mgs of Boron shohld increase D3 and also heal 100 other illnesses too …now there might be a good reason totake Boron instead
I do both. hmmm
Cox@yahoo.com same thing with me. I found out later it was a water issue. I drank more water during the day and it went away. Dihy can do really bad things to the body.
I drink water first with any sudden pain. If it goes away, I was water issue, if not go for the meds. It works.

Where can I find more information on Boron? A credible source. I have heard of it. I am just curious what illnesses it can heal?
Boron is also found in Trace Minerals that I add to my Reverse Osmosis Water to remineralizer
it
and avoid ingesting Fluoride and Chlorine and chemicals from tap water. It’s good for the bones and teeth.
Boron is taken by bodybuilders to strengthen bones. 10mg per day.
I inadvertently was taking too much D3, ended up with heart ‘irregularities’.
Cardiologist pointed out that I was OD’ing on D3. After I dialed it back the problem went away.
Same here, but cardiologist didn’t catch that even though he is the one that suggested me to take Vitamin D. He did blood work n said levels of Vitamin D were now good……it wasnt!!! It was too high. Endocrinologist is the one that it was to high. I thank God for her. Palpitations were absolutely horrible.
If you take 5000 IU D3 a day before a blood sugar test the results are masked and the test need to be redone to read
My doctor told me the same thing about taking biotin so now I have to stop taking any vitamins
with biotin for two weeks before my thyroid test. Most vitamins now have biotin up the kazoo in them. I can only get one non-biotin multi-vitamin from Amazon. Regular pharmacies don’t carry non-biotin.
I dread what will happen if that one supplier goes out of business!
I’ve been taking 50,000 units of Vitamin D2 per week for over 30 years
How much D3 is recommended?
I take 10,000 IU’s daily. My routine Lipid and Metobolic bloodwork tests have not shown any concerning “effect”.
Where is this information available?
RDA is usually 400mg daily- try googling it. Higher doses for those who are deficient
Everything is wrong now!!! Everything that has been used so far is no longer good!! Only their vaccines are good, isn t so ????
RJ the same thing happened to me heart irregularities from high doses of D3
How high of a dose of D3 were you taking to have issues?
Did you have AF?
“Some of the most popular symptoms of this health condition are”… I think the word you were looking for was “common” rather than “popular.” I guarantee you those symptoms are NOT popular with anybody.
Sorry Marian. All those side effects is excess vitamin D consumption are based on people consuming crazy amounts of it. How is possible that anybody can unintentionally take 200,000 IU of Vitamin D when they come typically in less than 4000IU caps, tables or soft gel, that means the guy took at least 50 units. If you take 50 units of any supplement you will probably end in the hospital.
What happened to smarts, fearless/unbiased reporting, a trustworthy CDC….seems we lost our moral fiber along the way. Our leaders should have been visciously pursuing the real origin of Covid, then prosecuting those involved, potentially including Fauci, WHO, the CDC, and all administrators at the CDC who withheld info on the vax.
This is ridiculous. Almost everyone in the US is vitamin D deficient. And vitamin D is a much needed vitamin, important to bone health, healthy metabolism, adequate magnesium absorption, and hundreds of other body needs. Usually people supplement with 2000-5000IU per day. Bc someone took super megadoses and ended up in the ER, doesn’t mean supplementation is bad. You can’t take any vitamin or drug to that extent and expect it to not harm you! Healthy serum vitamin d levels should be 70-100
Also, if on viyamin d supplement, you should take k2 400mg. K2 helps the vitamin d push calcium out of serum into bone
What is the recommended dosage of vitamin D daily for both men and women? Also, like all vitamins, there are so many companies manufacturing these pills. Is the quality the same if you buy any vitamin brand?
Leonard Bloom, Ph.D.
What are the 4 effects from vit D? Tired of these headlines then nothing in the articles address it!
If you take high doses of vitamin D3, you need to also take vitamin K. The vitamin K makes sure your body stores the excess vitamin D in your body fat, where it belongs. Without the vitamin k, your body will store it in your arteries, causing arteriosclerosis. Read somewhere and practice this myself.
I just started taking vitamin D3. The nurse practitioner suggested I take one a day if it is 2000 IU AND TWO A DAY IF IT IS 1000 IU. a normal vitamin D level is between 32 and 100 mine was at 17.4.
A K2 supplement should be taken when taking a D3. I understand this for the correct absorption of the D3. Is this correct and why?
Hello, I just wanted to comment on vitamin D 3 . I am a Diabetic , low dose insulin at night. I take several other supplements on my own. I have never had any reaction to it , and I take 10,000 U I’s a day . I also take Vitamin B complex with C, and Biotin I take these with my breakfast and my prescription Medicines.. I do NOT take Metformin . I always . have a well balanced breakfast. I will not start my day with out a good Breakfast. Thanks for letting me share my daily life with Vitamin D 3 . .. from Wisconsin .
Vitamin D3 caused calcium ( normal mineral in your blood )to gather together making a blockage in my artery in my brain and it could be a blockage in other artery’s too! Found this blockage by MRI.
I take 100,000 iu’s of Vit d weekly. I was just diagnosed with heart irregularities. My cardiologist didn’t say anything about it but it makes me wonder if there’s a connection.
I actually wanted to know what my baseline level of Vitamin D is, unfortunately having a Vitamin D level checked isn’t covered by insurance because it’s considered as “wellness” and there’s no code for it!
My doctor labeled as “deficiency” and insurance approved it! Anything below 20 wasn’t good, yet the average level around the world was in the teens, mine was 62, but I take 40,000 IU/day with fish oil, since it’s cold, flu and covid season! I’ll drop to 20k as it warms up! I’ve been taking the high dosage for almost 6 months with no problems and I walk everyday!
It may also be a K2 deficit. D3 is usless without K2. You cannot od on K2. Most diets dont make enough in colon.
I was overdosed on Vit D 3 and it caused heart problems, dizziness, & falling. I have not taken any in the past 5 years and it just got too low, so I am on a 5000iu per day for a month. then testing. Easy to forget to take vitamins, but some are important, others not so much.
I take 3 1000IU a day I am now having heart Irregularities? Could it be this?
I was dx’d in recent years with kidney issues (my creatinine levels were off) and I have been drinking a lot of milk for awhile. It actually seemed to help me get thru Covid 19 without catching it. I was advised by a medical group to stop all Caffeine and drink more water.
Vitamin D is not a mineral. Makes me doubt the who article.
I was given D3 after my breast cancer surgery. I was told D3 is to provide protection against reoccurrence. Has that changed?
My doc told me to take D3 because I was low…never get much sun since skin cancer…While she was on vacation, her partner told me to double dose…a month later I drove myself to hospital…kidney stone…
Well how much vitamin D is not good for your body and why haven’t we been told about this earlier in life that too much vitamin D is not good for your body
I took Colecalciferol 200 calcium carbonate 750mg which is VD for 5 years for breast cancer now have a very
Bad corrosive stomach issues and I am convinced it the reason I got i
I take 500 IU of D3 daily. Is that too much?
what is considered a high dose of D3
Vitamin D should not be taken without magnesium. Vitamin D uses magnesium to make the active form of vitamin D in the liver, thus depleting magnesium if you are not taking it. A lack of magnesium can cause serious heart arrhythmia. I take 2 gms a day in divided doses. Magnesium can cause gut issues so titarate up to that dose and dose accordingly.
Doctors are amazingly ignorant on this subject, and by the way the routine lab magnesium test is inaccurate. It does not measure magnesium levels in the cells.
I have taken over 20 k a day for years without problems.
Doctors get zero nutrition schooling. Just a fyi.
You are so right about doctors not knowing much on the subject of nutrition and supplements.
Doctors are taught about drugs. Write a prescription, repeat. Everything is in a form of a pill to cure what ails you instead of taking a more natural approach of what the body needs to heal itself.
most doctors are ignorant on nutrition. when I discussed this with them they have to research it. they are only trained to evaluate symptoms and prescribe medications and most are ignorant to the side effects of those meds and end up prescribing more meds to treat the side effects
Agree about drs. lack of education regarding nutrition and probably in nursing school education also. What lab test should be ordered then for magnesium?
Bruce you are so Right On!! Thanks for posting
True! MDs barely get any training but chiropractors do!! Trust them or an alternative MD or DO.
what are your credentials?
I’m reading here, that you need to take D3 with Magnesium. That’s great to know! What’s also important to know is, if you take Thyroid medication, Never take Magnesium, until, at least, 6 hour after, taking thyroxine.
I don’t know what the interaction is, but the Pharmicist was careful to impress this point, when giving me the Magnesium.
Just thought this might be helpful to know.
I take 6000 units of D3 and my blood work came back within the middle/normal range for D3. It is important to get blood work don and not guess.
What kind of irregularities?
Vitamin D toxicity causes renal failure, calcification of soft tissues throughout the body (including in coronary vessels and heart valves), cardiac arrhythmias, and even death. Vitamin D toxicity has been caused by consumption of dietary supplements that contained excessive vitamin D amounts because of manufacturing errors, that were taken inappropriately or in excessive amounts, or that were incorrectly prescribed by physicians.
Really bad heart palpitations n kidney stones. Had stones removed twice within 5 months!!!
I take 25mcg(1,000 IU) Is that to much to take?
Some people with Scandinavian blood have mutations (CBS699 and SUOX mutations) that cause the buildup of both phosphorus and calcium in the blood. (Vit Ds action is to increase absorption of Calcium and Phosphorus from food). If you have CBS699 and SUOX mutations, you already havr too much calcium and phosphorus in your system and you dont need any vitamin that makes you absorb more calcium and phosphorus from your foods because you already have too much in your body to start with. So if you have CBS699 and SUOX mutations (which many people with Scsndinavian genes do) Vit D will be toxic for you and cause bad health problems. People with light skin snd light eyes actually need to avoid Vitamin D like the plague. And Vit D also depletes magnesium and magnesium is integral in making the hormone Calcitonin. And Calcitonin is integral in helping calcium deposit properly into bone matrix. Without Calcitonin(aka without magnesium) calcium will not deposit properly into bone matrix, and instead will deposit into soft tissues like muscles and heart muscle and cause all sorts of problems like heart beat irregularities and muscle spasming which can lead to bad muscle cramps and heart attacks and
I hope 25mcg(1,000 IU) is enough. That’s the amount of what I also take. I think it was the highest amount that Costco carried. I have my blood panel done in about a week.
It’s not the same for everyone. Have your doctor check your D level.
what foods can u take instead of the pill.
My wife takes 7.5″ of vitamin D daily. Does her good!
To the person who wrote this article, Vit D is not a mineral. It is a fat soluble vitamin. 600 to 800 IU of D is an adequate dose, more common is 1000 to 5000. It is best to have a vit D test, then choose based on that. Follow up D test at three months is recomended. Best sources of D are fish. Trout, salmon, tuna, and mackerel) and fish liver oils are best natural sources. Vegetables are not a source of ” D ” Make sure your diet or suplments include magnesium, D requires it.
FFS, this is impossible to read. Nothing but advertisements.
Wow, so do you take it or not. Nothing is safe anymore 😕
Hi I have been deficient in vitamin D for years. Even with the 50,000 IU I’m still low? My daughter and son are also deficient in vitamin D3. Any suggestions?
Vitamin D is THE most important hormone for your immune system. Ever since I started taking 20,000 IU of D3 with 200 mcg of K2 and 50 mg of Magnesium every day, I have not gotten sick even when hanging out with people with colds, flu, & COVID. Previous to taking those supplements, I caught COVID 3 times even after getting the COVID vaccines with boosters. I have experienced none of the problems listed on this site. I believe that taking K2 with Magnesium prevents you from the side effects of taking high doses of D3.
Preciso desta vitamina no precinho !
not one of u mentionrd taking d3 with k2 to help keep the d3 where it needs to be
when I was drinking an extremely unhealthy amount of alcohol I had a vit d and b6 deficiency. both supplements were prescribed by my VA doctor. the one thing that brought my levels back to normal was quiting alcohol. idf you drink alcohol supplements may help but in my case the levels were never good no matter how much I took. 20+ drinks of alcohol a day will rob your body of nutrients and quiting will bring those levels back to normal.
may take awhile but after 1.5 years of sobriety I don’t need those supplements anymore
Take D3 with K2. Osteoporosis is no picnic. Get your D levels checked regularly with a blood test.
“don’t take more vitamins than doctors tell you to.” Many doctors will tell you that you do not need any.
You need vitamin K2 with D3 to keep calcium in your bones not in soft tissues if your taking high doses over 5,000 IU per day. Also adequate levels of magnesium!
I take both vitamin D3, magnesium and potassium. My last blood work showed I was ok on all. However lately I’ve been suffering from strong leg cramps while trying to sleep. The nurse at my job recommended me checking those levels, so what could be causing them?
I’m on a prescription vitamin D 50,000 units once a week. My bloodwork has been good. I live in Ohio where we have such a variance of weather and limited sun. Should I take this much or is it safe since it was Dr. subscribed. He never mentioned Magnesium or that you should take with your D supplement. I also take B12 injections 2 x a month…
The doctor put me on 10,000 D3 And now I am facing kidney Stones, or something. I have not been able to walk up right for 6 weeks. (I have had to sure wheelchair). They are still looking, just got tested for kidney stones. But do not have app with doctor for 5 more days to see what it says. The way doctors work these days is a wait and see thing. That is if you are aver 70 years old. The just wait and may you will get OK. Better Luck to you all.
I was told my Vitamin D number is very low, 15. For many years my D has been low but all Drs. Say is take Vitamin D everyday which doesn’t do anything. Any suggestions? Should I be worried? I do have AFib and had a stroke yrs. Ago so I normally worry over everything.
After getting all the vaxes and still getting COVID 3 times, I started taking 20,000 iu of vitamin D3, 200 mcg of K2, 150 mg of magnesium, & 40 mg of zinc every day, and for the past 2 years I have not gotten sick from anything even though I have been hanging out with people who had COVID, Flu, Colds, and Strep.
Our bodies evolved to be outside all day in the sun. Your body’s own skin will manufacture 20,000 iu of D3 if you lay out in the sun for 40 minutes in the summer. Unfortunately, most of us are indoors all day so we get very little sun exposer especially in the winter months. D3 is THE most important hormone for strengthening your immune system That is the reason why everyone gets sick in the Winter time. D3 helps one emotionally by lowering depression , which is why the suicide rate is so high in the winter.
If you are taking a lot of D3, be sure to also take the co-factors as well. Take 100 mcg of K2, 25 mg of magnesium, & 20mg of zinc for every 10,000 iu of D3. Taking the co-factors will keep your calcium in the bones instead of adding it to your artery walls which would be a bad thing.
Are vitamins and minerals good for our kidneys? How long we take maintenance medicines? Is it true that medicine maintenence is to maintain us sick?
I was taking them and was taken off, when we found out I have classification kidney stones??
This is such a biased and incomplete article aiming at getting you to not take vitamin D. Food sources are terrible. Your skin in sun generates a whopping 5000 IU in minutes, in full sun, bathing suit, maybe 10 minutes. Obviously not toxic. People go sunbathing, get sunburned etc without toxicity. Dark skin needs more time. UVB is needed so this is during the “danger times”. In winter UVB is rare. Your liver stores VIt D through the winter, so you need to store it up in summer but supplementing is easy. 5000 IU is safe. 10,000 probably is too but is probably the max without a blood test. It takes time to build up levels, on the order of months. As stated by others magnesium is vital to proper Vit D metabolism. It won’t work with low magnesium no matter how much you take. Magnesium chloride is a great form because it is also anti bacterial and antiviral. Was even used to stop polio back in the day. Try concentrace minerals from seawater, mostly mg chloride. See book Magnesium by Dr Thomas Levy. It’s been said that when they discovered vit D, they were giving 10 mg, 400,000 IU and nobody got sick. They decided to create the IU system where 1 mg is 40,000 IU to make it sound like a lot. Then they said you only need 400 IU. There were high calcium issues but these are suspect about how dangerous this is. We eat too much dairy, which has inadequate magnesium for the amount of calcium. Half as much.
The reason that Vitamin D should be taken with caution (blood levels checked) is because it is fat soluble, so it stays in body fat. Over time too much D can have adverse effects, even death. Most vitamins are water soluble and pass through the body,
D3 Taken with Vitamin K2 and Vitamin A is the holy trinity of CA+2 regulation. This is pretty well published and not a new finding. Why did the article not mention this, but instead recommended a lesser ineffective quantity of Vitamin D3?
I take 1000 iu(25mcg), should I be taking some with it.
I have been taking a magnesium, D3 combo that also has zinc and it has worked well for me for several years now. I sleep better, less anxiety and better mood.
So Vitamin D is bad for you? Sounds to me like the medical industry wrote this to keep us sick. Vitamin D is critical to our well being. Most diseases are caused by too low Vitamin D. We all stay inside all year long. Sunshine only hits us when we go from our front doors to our cars. Silly article!
